Il segno inciso di Giorgio Morandi. Matrici e stampe a confronto

Engraving is one of the most fundamentally important aspects of Giorgio Morandi’s artistic career: he was an extraordinary practitioner of the art, one of the most significant ever to appear on the European scene.
Museo Morandi presents, in collaboration with the Istituto Nazionale della Grafica in Rome, fourteen carefully-selected plates, accompanied by the prints made from them, most of which come from the Museo’s own collection.  They reveal the dedication that the Bolognese master brought to his practice of this technique, which he always understood as an artistic pursuit in its own right.
The exhibition’s offerings are enriched by the presence of some plates given to the Calcografia [Institute of Engraving] in 2010 by Carlo Zucchini, sponsor of the Morandi donation to the City of #bologna, among them Still Life in a Roundel (1942), produced for the publishing-house of the Il Milione gallery in Milan, which the general catalogue of Morandi’s prints records as having been destroyed.  In addition, display-cases contain the notebook in which Morandi listed in his own hand the printings made from his plates; Portrait of Morandi, an etching by Carlo Alberto Petrucci (Director of the Calcografia in Rome from 1933 to 1953 and himself an engraver); and letters exchanged by Petrucci and Morandi.
