Through extended hours - even up to 9 hours, adrift alone at sea - #petermatthews creates his paintings and drawings while submerged in the Ocean. Risking death to create his work in the swells of the ocean, Matthew's even used one canvas as a gurney to carry a drowning man. Many works are created with a make-shift flotation device, the rusted paper evidencing the rungs where the paper or canvas has been attached to board. Through this activity, Matthews questions whether the act of art-making can capture an essence, a thought, a momentary fleeting feeling. For Matthews, there is an immediacy and connectivity in his practice that attempts to record an experience in location and time. His practice incorporates sculpture, video, and performance. Beers is exhibiting various works by Matthews from 2012 -present made in Taiwan, Hawaii, mainland US, and the UK.
