The 3rd exhibition of epea - European Photo Exhibition Award
will arrive directly from Paris
and will open on October 15 in Villa Argentina, Viareggio

For the first time it will be in #viareggio, thanks to Fondazione Banca del Monte di Lucca.

epea03, the third edition of the European Photo Exhibition Award, the photo exhibition of 12 photographers who, in a period of nine months, have traveled throughout Europe, to produce their works, to show the most profound changes, according to the Shifting Boundaries given theme.

What emerged is a collective of hundreds of images that focus the evolution of European territories, either as a single entity or as individual states, and that thanks to the collaboration with the Province of Lucca and the Municipality of #viareggio will be exhibited at Villa Argentina (Viareggio) from October 15 to December 11, free admission.

After the first French round, at the headquarters of the Fondation Gulbenkian – Délégation en France in Paris (open until August 28), and after #viareggio, this important exhibition on photography will arrive in 2017 in Hamburg and Oslo.

The photographers, chosen by the Fondazione Banca del Monte di Lucca, are selected by Enrico Stefanelli creator, soul and artistic director of Photolux Festival.

One of the best ways to perceive the history of Europe is examining its constant and complex changes and transformations, as symptoms of a dynamic process of development that has a tendency not only to reshape reality, but also their own ideas and images. It’s a little wonder, then, that the recent analysis of the contemporary situation in Europe have focused on the effects of the major transformations taking place in society.

The transition to a post-industrial society, the sharp increase of the flow and of communication networks and goods, the increased mobility of people, particularly the resumption of immigration (and the consequent intensification of the debate on integration conditions, but also control and legality). And more: the effects of globalization, economic, technological and cultural. These are just some examples that reinforce the idea that we are facing significant (and sometimes radical) changes in living conditions and social and cultural facilities in Europe. A perception that has been recently emphasized by the severe economic crisis and policy that had devastating consequences for society, instigating new fronts in the European space fragmentation and the emerge of new types of phenomena and conflict.

VILLA ARGENTINA – A 1921 Villa built and designed by Francesco Luporini to accommodate commercial and residential activities. In 1926, with the transfer of the ownership to Francesca Racca Oytana, the building was enlarged and transformed into a villa and enriched with Galileo Chini decorations on the facades (one of the greatest proofs of ceramics for architecture produced by Fornaci Chini in Borgo San Lorenzo).
A further enlargement came in 1939 with Arboreo Baroness Sant’Elisa. In the 60s the Villa became a hotel, while in the mid-80s the building was in a state of complete abandonment. To prevent its ruin the building was bound by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage in 1989. In 2001, the Province of Lucca bought it for 3 billion Italian lira.
