Collezione Ramo presents the second edition of #milanodrawingweek, a twelve-stop journey through the city, entirely dedicated to drawing, from contemporary artists to 20th century masters. 

For nine days, the dialogue between modern and contemporary will come to life through works on paper, in a series of exhibitions in collaboration with museums and galleries across Milan. 

The event is held in collaboration with and with the patronage of the Municipality of Milan’s Department of Culture.

From Saturday 19 to Sunday 27 November 2022, Milan’s Collezione Ramo presents the second edition of Milano Drawing Week, an annual event sponsored by the Municipality of Milan’s Department of Culture, which aims to target and engage the entire city with drawing and takes shape in a series of exhibitions dotted across the Milan area. For the occasion, #collezioneramo has provided a selection of works on paper by Italian artists of the twentieth century to a circuit of Milanese galleries and institutions. The invitation, addressed to one artist per space, is to identify a work from the collection and place it in dialogue with their own research.

With this second edition of Milano Drawing Week, #collezioneramo reconfirms its link with the city, which becomes fertile ground for new reflections related to the artistic practice of drawing and a crossroads of different exhibitions and institutions.

The prestigious Castello Sforzesco Drawing Department will be collaborating with the event once again this year, allowing further comparison with ancient drawing.

The #milanodrawingweek 2022 itinerary includes Milan’s Castello Sforzesco, Castiglioni, Ciaccia Levi, Clima Gallery, Galleria ZERO…, Gió Marconi, Gregor Staiger, kaufmann repetto, Loom Gallery, Martina Simeti, OPR Gallery and Renata Fabbri.

Milano Drawing Week presents works by contemporary artists Stefano de Paolis, #zoewilliams, #vijaymasharani, Carlo and Fabio Ingrassia, #dashashishkin, #monsterchetwynd, #lilyvanderstokker, #ignaciouriarte, #aleko, #martaroberti and Carlo Cossignani in dialogue with those of the great masters of the 20^th century, Fabio Mauri, Carol Rama, Lucio Fontana, Medardo Rosso, Mino Maccari, Massimo Campigli, Vincenzo Agnetti, Irma Blank, Giacomo Balla, Sandro Chia, Mario Radice and Adolfo Wildt, in a programme aimed at casting more light on the expressive art of drawing.

Irina Zucca Alessandrelli, Curator at #collezioneramo, elaborates: “Milano Drawing Week, now in its second edition, returns to thrill and intrigue, confirming its place as an event of great interest for the city. It is an annual opportunity to give this artistic practice the importance it deserves and the attention that has not yet been attributed to it. The basis for the event is the dialogue between modern and contemporary, which continues to stimulate artists and public alike with new discoveries. Drawing encourages thought like nothing else because one discovers while drawing and, while looking at the marks made on paper, one finds the original idea of the artist in all its authenticity. I am grateful for the support that the City of Milan and Councillor for Culture Tommaso Sacchi have shown #milanodrawingweek since its inception. I am also grateful for the enthusiasm of the artists and the curators of the Castello Sforzesco Drawing Department, and the support of the #contemporaryart galleries. This new edition intends to show drawing as it has never been seen before, as part of an ongoing search for new protagonists.”

Since the early 1900s, Collezione Ramo has closely followed the marks made on paper by the major representatives of the Italian artistic movements as well as great unknown talents. The intent is to document the wealth of this artistic practice from the last century to the contemporary, not solely with drawings, but all works on paper (watercolours, collages, gouaches, pastels, and so on). The purpose of the collection is to present the great importance of Italian art and build a culture around drawing, with its own autonomous value, on a par with painting and sculpture.

Collezione Ramo made its first public appearance in November 2018 at Milan’s Museo del

Novecento with the exhibition “Chi ha paura del disegno?” (Who’s afraid of drawing?) which, in April 2019, travelled to the Estorick Collection in London with its English title. A small exhibition entitled “La città moderna a casa Libeskind” (The Modern City at Casa Libeskind) was presented at Daniel Libeskind's house in CityLife in April 2018, while “Ritorno al collage” (Return to Collage) opened in the Bosco Verticale attic in May 2019.

The great exhibition “Silent Revolutions: Italian Drawings from the Twentieth Century” held at the

Menil Drawing Institute in Houston marked the first presentation of a private collection of modern Italian drawing in an American museum. The #collezioneramo is published in “Disegno italiano del

XX secolo” (Italian Drawing of the 20^th Century) by Irina Zucca Alessandrelli (Silvana Editoriale, Milan, 2018).
