FRANCO GUERZONI. FUEROS opens at Galleria Civica of Modena in the context of FESTIVALFILOSOFIA 2015

On Friday, September 18 2015 at 6.30pm, in the upper rooms of Palazzo Santa Margherita in Corso Canalgrande 103, Modena, the exhibition Franco Guerzoni. Fueros will open.
Promoted and organised by the Galleria civica di Modena and the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Modena, it is designed by Franco Guerzoni on the invitation of Marco Pierini  – former director of the Galleria Civica di Modena – and the festivalfilosofia.
The painter par excellence of the effect of time, of which he has brought into the art dimension the tension between construction and cancellation, permanence and gaps, memory and oblivion, in this exhibition Franco Guerzoni displays the work on memory from his own personal research trajectory.
The order of the works reflects this curving of a reflexive and unknowing time: major recent works are placed side by side with others belonging to cycles from the early ‘70s, a season forgotten and almost removed. Brought to light by the critical gaze of Pier Giovanni Castagnoli and commented by Marc Augé (Paesaggi in polvere, 2006), these ‘unresolved’ outcomes document a meandering research carried out with his friend Luigi Ghirri: everyday ruins, derelict buildings, abandoned, worn down frescoes are captured by use of photography just before their definitive disappearance.
Fossil relics surviving in one of the layers of memory, like the Freudian fueros, these forgotten works are suddenly mixed with the present, activating new translations and abnormal temporal tensions, as revealed in the major recent works through the mnemonic code of the artist’s entire opus.

The exhibition, on show until Sunday 20 September in the upper rooms of Palazzo Santa Margherita, Corso Canalgrande 103, Modena, will be accessible free of charge between the following times:
Friday 18 September from 9am to 11pm, Saturday 19 September from 9am to 1am, and Sunday 20 September from 9am to 9pm.

Biographical notes

Franco Guerzoni was born in 1948 in Modena, where he lives and works. He debuted in the Conceptual field in the early ’70s, with his personal research into the systems of representation of imagery and the photographic rendering of the archaeological world. In the early ’80s, he produced major plastered mural works, Carte di viaggio and Grotte, in which undecipherable memories of distant styles are found alongside their empty spaces, removed by the wear and tear of time. His later research into the depth of surfaces gave rise to major cycles of work like ‘Decorazioni’ and ‘Rovine’ (presented at the Venice Biennale in ’90) and Restauri provvisori (1994), which show endless layers of memory and pictorial experience in the matter. In a more intensely chromatic direction, ‘Orienti’ (1999) and Pompei-Bombay (2001) continue the exploration of the appearance of the image within the tension between construction and cancellation. With Antichi Tracciati (2007), Powder Landscapes (2008), Impossibili restauri (2010, and at the Venice Biennale in 2011), Museo ideale (2012) and La parete dimenticata (Florence, Palazzo Pitti, 2013), invisible memories and likenesses of findings merge together on the walls, hinting at the idea of a bas-relief. More recently, after the rediscovery of a set of images of his early experiments, he reworked the motifs and visions on show as Nessun luogo (Nowhere). Viaggi randagi con Luigi Ghirri (at the Milan Triennial, 2014) and Archeologie senza restauro (at the Bologna MAMbo, 2014).

Pier Giovanni Castagnoli was born in Parma in 1946. He has taught in the Universities of Bologna, Venice, Padua and at the same time working in the management of museums, between 1982 and 2008 directing the Galleria civica in Modena, the Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Bologna and the Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Turin. In 2002, the Ministry of Culture and Communication of France awarded him the title of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Artes e des Lettres.
