Studio Makkink & Bey creates interior for the Temporary Fashion Museum in Rotterdam

On 13 September this year the Temporary #fashion Museum is opening its doors in Rotterdam. Even though many (international) #fashion designers hail from the Netherlands, a physical location for exhibiting and admiring the contribution of Dutch #fashion has so far been lacking. Studio Makkink & Bey has been asked by EventArchitectuur to take part in this special project and the studio, in its inimitable way, is giving shape to this crossover between fashion, #design and architecture.

Studio Makkink & Bey, which comprises architect Rianne Makkink and designer Jurgen Bey, has frequently handled comparable projects both in the Netherlands and abroad. Last year, for instance, they designed an exhibition hall for Jean Paul Gaultier which housed his travelling retrospective exhibition in the Grand Palais in Paris and in the Haus der Kunst in Munich. They also set up stores for the Camper shoe label in France and Italy.

Rianne Makkink explains the nature of the challenge for them in the Temporary #fashion Museum: "In our work we let ourselves be guided by what is present and how this can evolve into something new. It involves more than just taking your inspiration from the past – it becomes an active archive." This philosophy can be found reflected everywhere in the main hall of the Temporary #fashion Museum. Using standardised storage shelves they display the clothing collections of collector Ferry van der Nat and the private couture collection of Swiss-born Eva Maria Hatschek in the exhibition 'Collected By'. "Thanks to the open and neutral #design of the shelf, the clothing can be viewed, studied and touched. There is a workspace for studying the collection of Eva Maria Hatschek, which is mostly stored in boxes." In addition, the exhibition features archive items from Studio Makkink & Bey itself, including a movie theatre that is now receiving its Dutch premiere in the Temporary #fashion Museum.

This same fascination for active archives can be found in the section 'Dressed by Architects – Surprising Finds' by Studio Makkink & Bey for the Temporary #fashion Museum. This is actually the fifth exhibition designed and curated by Studio Makkink & Bey in the basement of Het Nieuwe Instituut (the location of the Temporary #fashion Museum). Surprising Finds takes a closer look at the special relationship between #fashion and architecture. "When architects make drawings of their designs, these are enlivened with images of people, future residents or users. These people are dressed by the architect's imagination." Taking these drawings as point of departure, Surprising Finds shows how #fashion and identity are reflected here. At the invitation of Studio Makkink & Bey, Studio Plott, BELÉN/18-11-81 and Camiel Fortgens will be responding to the items of the historical collection with guest interventions.
