This year, Anna-Stina Malmborg and Gunnar Höglund have donated EUR 5.4 million for the acquisition of art for the Moderna Museet collection.

Anna-Stina Malmborg and Gunnar Höglund have been two of Sweden’s most prominent art collectors since the 1960s. In 2015, they added the breathtaking sum of EUR 5.4 million to the Anna-Stina Malmborg and Gunnar Höglund Foundation for the acquisition of art for Moderna Museet. The Foundation focuses on contemporary works by artists active in Europe and the USA.

“The donation by Anna-Stina Malmborg and Gunnar Höglund marks the beginning of an entirely new chapter in Moderna Museet’s history. The Museum has experienced nothing like this for many decades. Key works by some of the world’s most seminal artists will become part of the Swedish people’s art heritage. This is an occasion for all of us to express our joy and gratitude,” says Daniel Birnbaum, director of Moderna Museet.

“This donation enhances Moderna Museet’s position as the leading Nordic museum of modern and contemporary art. The generosity of Anna-Stina Malmborg and Gunnar Höglund is unparallelled, and the Moderna Museet collection has now gained further key works by important international artists. This is a pivotal contribution to Sweden’s art scene,” says Ann-Sofi Noring, co-director.

The following works have been purchased with funds from the Anna-Stina Malmborg and Gunnar Höglund Foundation in 2015:

About the Moderna Museet Collection
Thanks to strategic acquisitions and donations from the Friends of Moderna Museet, The American Friends and private collectors, the Museum now has one of few international collections that can deliver a conclusive presentation of art from the dawn of modernism to today. The collection includes key works by Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, Henri Matisse, Meret Oppenheim and Robert Rauschenberg, and also more recent acquisitions of pieces by contemporary artists such as Doris Salcedo, Gabriel Orozco, Olafur Eliasson, Isa Genzken, Wade Guyton and Klara Lidén. Photography and photo-based art from the 1840s to today also forms part of the Moderna Museet collection, which currently comprises approximately 5,000 paintings, sculptures and installations, 25,000 watercolours, drawings and prints, and 100,000 photographs.
