A varied series of events exploring the themes of the classic, cult and contemporary films on the bill of this year’s Film4 Summer Screen at #somersethouse
Behind the Screen returns to #somersethouse in August with a diverse and entertaining programme of talks, screenings and activities for all ages, which celebrate cinema and cast a spotlight on some of the subjects featured in the Film4 Summer Screen line-up.
Highlights of Behind the Screen 2016 include:
Behind the Covers: capturing fashion on film
Former Vogue editor Polly Devlin will reveal the details of her working relationships with the legendary real-life inspirations for Funny Face – Diana Vreeland and Richard Avedon – offering unique insights into the fabulous world of fashion.
School of Rook: Ben Wheatley & Andy Starke in conversation
Ben Wheatley, director of the recently acclaimed High-Rise, and producer Andy Starke are long- time collaborators, since working together on Wheatley’s debut Down Terrace. With Film4 Summer Screen curator David Cox, they will talk about their careers in #film, their creative partnership and their production company Rook Films, plus their cinematic inspirations.
Cinema and the rise of the man-machine
Ex Machina was the surprise standout of this year’s Oscars and its Academy Award winning FX advisor Andrew Whitehurst will join AI and robotics expert and former host of Robot Wars Professor Noel Sharkey for a lively debate, which asks if Hollywood is right to make audiences fear the rise of robots and AI, ahead of the dark and futuristic double bill of Ex Machina and RoboCop.
Nicolas Roeg: It’s About Time
Somerset House will present a free screening of a documentary on the visionary director Nicolas Roeg, whose haunting masterpiece Walkabout will be shown on the courtyard screen. It will also be introduced by the documentary’s director David Thompson, who had access to many of the cast and crew with whom Roeg worked, such as Julie Christie and Jenny Agutter.

A renowned #film location in its own right, the popular #somersethouse #film location tours will also return to the Behind the Screen programme. A knowledgeable guide will show the site where Helena Bonham Carter blows up a postbox in Suffragette, Gerard Butler lands a helicopter in #london Has Fallen, Edward Fox procures a false identity in The Day of the Jackal and Keira Knightley is summoned to stay in The Duchess. The building has also stood in for New York in Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow, posed as St Petersburg in Goldeneye and the MI6 headquarters in Tomorrow Never Dies.

Sex, Perversion and the Victorians: Dracula on Screen
Ahead of the courtyard screening of Francis Ford Coppola’s classic #film Bram Stoker’s Dracula, join historian Fern Riddell, author of ‘A Victorian Guide to Sex’ and advisor on ‘Ripper Street’, for a lively lecture on cinema's most reincarnated vampire.

Ready for Her Close Up
The Guardian’s Pamela Hutchinson and Isabel Stevens of Sight & Sound magazine present an illustrated history of the formidable female stars who ran Hollywood and pay tribute to actress, comedienne and pioneer Gloria Swanson, star of Sunset Boulevard and one of the grande dames of Golden Age cinema.

Random Acts #film shorts evening
A showcase of the best in experimental, visionary shorts commissioned by Random Acts, Channel 4’s cutting-edge short #film strand. Editor of Random Acts Pegah Farahmand will host the special evening with guests including artist-filmmaker Matthew Stone. Shorts featured in the showcase include Wrath by musician Mica Levi and choreographer Holly Blakey and exclusively to Behind the Screen, the directorial debut of presenter Reggie Yates.

Film4 Summer Screen Short Films Showcase
A selection of new short films from emerging British filmmakers includes the UK premieres of two films backed by Film4 productions – hard-hitting Polar Bear by Sean Buckley, and mysterious The Briny by Lucy Kirkwood. Further titles to be announced.

This workshop will introduce participants to the practice of character design. Guided through the process of designing and defining a character’s appearance and actions, the workshop will culminate with the creation of the participants’ own avatar, as they make their characters come to life using simple animation techniques.

The Final Girls Present: Reinventing the Final Girl
An illuminating and entertaining evening of short films and discussion exploring the familiar genre trope of the ‘final girl alive’, inspired by the ingeniously self-reflexive horror satire The Final Girls, which will be screened as part of the evening’s double-bill with similarly spoof-tastic Galaxy Quest.
