Michel Houellebecq Rester vivant
This is not a show “about” #michelhouellebecq, but a show “by” #michelhouellebecq, demonstrating how the writer has produced a form that contributes to the reinvention of exhibitions, by mixing up literature and photography, between fact and fiction
Poet, essayist, novelist and filmmaker, #michelhouellebecq has always had close ties with the cinema and the world of the visual arts, which have accompanied and extended his reflexions since the start of his career, as the frequent allusions to them in his novels attest.
This show is a scenario, leading visitors through the writer’s obsessions. Made up of sounds, photographs, installations and films he has conceived, as well as the presence of several guest artists (Robert Combas, Raphaël Sohier, Renaud Marchand and Maurice Renoma) it will offer an immersion into the world and mind of the protean creator who is #michelhouellebecq.

Clément Cogitore L'intervalle de résonance
Palais de Tokyo is presenting L’intervalle de résonance, an original monumental video installation by Clément Cogitore (born in 1983 in Colmar, lives between Strasbourg and Paris). Following on from his feature movie, Ni le ciel ni la terre [The Wakhan Front], which was shown at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015 and nominated for the 2016 César for Best First Feature Film, and his video Un Archipel, shown in 2011 at #palaisdetokyo, Clément Cogitore is pursuing his exploration of the rational and legendary reverberation of ungraspable phenomena.

The starting point of the video installation devised by Cogitore is based on two unexplained phenomena having physical origins: the supposed perception of sounds emitted by the Northern Lights, and the appearance of a mysterious luminous object in Alaska. In both cases, superstitions and the Inuit and Saami belief systems have disturbed the quest for scientific explanations. Through the images and stories produced by these phenomena, a tale is set midway “between a personal and a collective mythology, between scientific protocol and ritual celebration, between fiction and documentary” » (1)
Stratospheric images, reflected on the ground, are melded with a dispersion in the darkened space of a polyglot voice and celestial music, composed by Francesco Filidei (born in 1973, lives in Pisa) and Lorenzo Bianchi Hoesch (born in 1973, lives in Paris), leading to both a loss of spatial markers, and a disturbance of the senses.

Dineo Seshee Bopape UNTITLED (OF OCCULT INSTABILITY) [FEELINGS]
For her exhibition at #palaisdetokyo, Dineo Seshee Bopape (born in 1981 in South Africa, lives in Johannesburg) has conceived an installation reflecting on feelings, psychic dissolution and weight of context. The video of the song “Feelings” performed by Nina Simone (1976, live in Montreux Jazz Festival) together with a consideration of Bessie Head’s novel, A question of power (1974), are the starting points of her research. Dineo Seshee Bopape explores with her installation the subjective question of affects by bringing together videos and depictions of pieces focused on the body engulfed by emotion in personal and in socio political contexts.

“If [Dineo Seshee Bopape] were Ghanaian, her name would be Akosua/Akos for short. In the year of her birth, the Brixton riots took place; two people were injured when a bomb exploded in a Durban shopping centre. Bobby Sands dies, MTV is launched, the Boeing 767 makes its first air flight, Umkhonto we Sizwe performs numerous underground assault operations against the apartheid state. There was an earthquake in China that killed maybe 50 people. Hosni Mubarak was elected president of Egypt, there was a coup d’etat in Ghana. Princess Diana of Britain married Charles. Bob Marley dies. Apartheid SA invaded Angola. AIDS is identified/created/named. Salman Rushdie releases Midnight’s Children. In the region of her birth: Her paternal grandmother died. Julius Malema is born. Millions of people cried. Millions of people laughed! The world’s population was apparently at around 4,529-billion. Bopape spent her youth in Limpopo in varying social situations. At 12 years of age she began to follow a hunger for an elsewhere, beginning with Durban where she spent some years and studied painting and sculpture. (…)”

Marguerite Humeau FOXP2
Palais de Tokyo has invited Marguerite Humeau (born in 1986 in France, lives in London) for her first major solo exhibition. The artist has produced an entire series of new work for the project; a physical and sensory experience at the crossroads between research and fiction.
Myths, speculations and fantasies are at the heart of Marguerite Humeau’s artwork. The development of each project includes a phase of extensive research and collaboration with numerous specialists and scientists.
At #palaisdetokyo, Marguerite Humeau re-enacts the origin of life and the development of conscious life forms in an ominous atmosphere.

The exhibition "FOXP2" by Marguerite Humeau will be presented at Nottingham Contemporary (United Kingdom) from October 15, 2016 to January 8, 2017.

Ayoung Kim In This Vessel We Shall Be Kept
Palais de Tokyo is hosting the first solo exhibition in France by the Korean artist Ayoung Kim (b. 1979 in Seoul). This follows on from her residency at the Pavillon Neuflize OBC, Palais de Tokyo’s research lab
(November 2015 - June 2016). The immersive sound installation that she presents at #palaisdetokyo takes root in the basement of the Palais Garnier - specifically in the depths of its famous underground “lake” – which she uses to stage a long forgotten mythical flood.

In keeping with her family history, Ayoung Kim has carried out extensive research on a fossil energy that has become a central motif of modernity and globalisation: oil. She recounts the development of the oil industry in the Middle East in her work, Zepheth, Whale Oil From the Hanging Gardens to You, Shell 3, presented in the main exhibition of the 56th Venice Biennale (All the World’s Futures, curator Okwui Enwezor, 2015).

Mika Rottenberg
For her second solo show in France, nearly ten years after an initial exhibition at La maison rouge (Paris) in 2008, Mika Rottenberg (born in 1976, in Buenos Aires) has chosen to revisit several of the video installations that consolidated her international reputation. The show will feature NoNoseKnows (2015) - lauded at the 56th Venice Biennale - Bowls Balls Souls Holes, (2014), SEVEN (2011) and Squeeze (2010), while presenting a selection of recent and new works specially produced for the exhibition.
For her work, Mika Rottenberg regularly reaches out to women whose physical particularities have been vaunted or made available on the Internet. Their bodies, which lie outside current norms and canons, inspire her films’ scenarios, in which they seem to be entirely focused on a variety of actions, carried out during chain-production processes. The materials under transformation often lead to the making of apparently absurd and unusable objects

With their captivating tales, in which reality seems to be warped into fiction, and whose fantasy and humour are rivalled only by their strangeness, her videos are screened in installations which act as showcases, while extending their universes. At #palaisdetokyo, the journey is also being enriched by several sculptures displaying anatomical details or playing back certain ordinary elements of everyday life – such as the twitching of a ponytail or the sound made by a water drop falling on a red-hot plaque.s.
