Born in 1953 in Diré, Mali, #abdoulayekonate is one of the major artists of the contemporary african art scene, reconognisable for his woven cotton artworks where the ethnic local traditions get along with the topics and the issues of the global society.
After a first artistic education at National Institute of Art in Bamako and subsequent studies at the Instituto Superior des #arte in Havana, Cuba, #abdoulayekonate has chosen to focus his work chiefly to the use of cotton, one of West Africa's fundamental products and forms of expression. The tension between the beauty of the locally woven cotton and the cheap fibres of the textile have allowed the artist to transform materials of common use in exceptional artworks perfectly suitable to support a reflection of endogenous matrix.
In this exhibition, through a symbolic and conceptual typesetting that use and balance colours beloging to a Manding cultural tradition, the public will be lead and immersed in the most harmonious research of the artist, deeply connected with the emotions and the feelings of human relationships. Distant from a traditional African aestethic, #abdoulayekonate, make himself stand out for the use of cottons stripes that determines and creates shapes and volumes, on an aesthetic line affected from the traditional clothing of the native populations of Mali.
"He refuses to approach the rid of images available today. He works with simple and terribly effective means" declares Joëlle Busca, art critic and doctor in aesthetic at University of Sorbonne of Paris, expert in contemporary african art "He creates spaces for reflection, offers new perspectives inviting the viewer to make a thorough investigation of the meaning of art and of the place of man in the world."
Influenced by the interest of the artist for the different gradations of colours, these artworks cover a specific narrative flow, telling a story more faint and less figurative to the eyes of the obsever. Furthermore, the different shades will create a silent dialogue made by suggestions and emotions, direct to investigate and catch the closer gaze of the #people, that astonished, will admire his artworks.
He worked for many years at the Musée National de Mali, he was Director of the Palais de la Culture and is currently Director General of the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers Multimédia Balla Fasseké Kouyaté in Bamako. His numerous partecipations to the most important museums and biennials and the several awards won in the #contemporaryart field, such as the prestigious Leopold Senghor Prize at the Dak'Art Biennale in Dakar, Senegal (1996), have represented a decisive momentum for the consecration of the artist in the African international art scene. Among the most important partecipations we can highlight Documenta 12, Kassel (2007) and the more recent group exhibition The Divine Comedy in MMK Frankfurt (2014), SCAD Savannah (2014-2015) and Smithsonian Institute, Washington (2015). Furthermore, Abdoulaye Konaté's artworks are exposed in several important collections all around the world, such as the Collection of Stichting Stedelijk Museum of Netherlands, the Foundation Sindika Dokolo in Angola, the Tiroche DeLeon Collection in Israel, the Maison Particulière in Belgium, the Smithsonian Institute in Washinghton, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Sigg Collection in Switzerland.
