The Lord Mayor of #dublin Brendan Carr will open Michael Kane’s new exhibition ‘Modality of the Visible’ at #dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane on Wednesday, 19th October at 6.30pm.  This exhibition can be viewed by the public, free of charge, from Thursday 20th October 2016 to Sunday 15th January 2017.

Over the past five decades #michaelkane has explored #dublin City observing and investigating the urban landscape. This familiarity inspired Kane’s imagination and yielded up powerful images which are captured in his paintings, drawings and woodcuts. This exhibition presents new work alongside a selection of seminal masterpieces - a survey of a long and committed career as an artist.

Lord Mayor Brendan Carr said, “I am delighted to open Michael Kane’s new exhibition.  It is great to see such a notable and acclaimed artist exhibiting here in the Hugh Lane Gallery which offers both Dubliners and visitors a great opportunity to view such a variety of art in such lovely surroundings.”

“Imagination is the key to working; I wanted to maintain the child’s imagination and connection with play in my work, this as well as the realities of experience.” – Michael Kane

In the work of #michaelkane one can see a masterful amalgam of the classical and the contemporary. For example his woodcut series of 1984, entitled Agamemnon Felled, which is displayed in the exhibition, sees the Greek tragedy played out in biting, sometimes comical, contemporary imagery.

The city continues to be Kane’s underlying motif inspired by the everyday movements of its inhabitants: the workers, the poets, and the artists.

Head of Exhibitions Michael Dempsey, said Kane’s “raw bold compositions, often collaged with magazine cuttings, create confrontational rhythmic images moving back and forth between figuration and abstraction”.

Director of the Gallery, Barbara Dawson, said “Just as Stephen Dedalus, who paced Sandymount Strand in Joyce’s Ulysses, pondering the Ineluctable Modality of the Visible – ‘thought through my eyes’ – so too does #michaelkane receive the city through a particular lens, one that sees the monumental in the ordinary and the familiar”.
