Jakarta, November 4th 2017 - Yayasan #jakartabiennale returns to hold the biannual #event, #jakartabiennale. With JIWA as its theme, the exhibition has been starting since November 4th 2017 until 10th December 2017 in three different locations. The main location is Gudang Sarinah Ekosistem, at Pancoran, South #jakarta, and also in several museums in #jakarta, namely  Museum Sejarah #jakarta, and  Museum Tekstil, Museum Seni Rupa dan Keramik,

JIWA was proposed by a performance artist, Melati Suryodarmo who is chosen as the Artistic Director. Melati is working with other four curators, they are Annisa Gultom (Jakarta), Hendro Wiyanto (Jakarta), Philippe Pirotte (Frankfurt) and Vit Havránek (Prague) to interpret the theme and chosing the artworks to be exhibited from 51 artists.

JIWA : #jakartabiennale 2017 propose a different approach compared to back issues of Biennale #jakarta in 2009-2015 that presented a contemporary reality and the ideas about the intervention of artistic practice, offered by the artists to address a variety of urban issues in #jakarta

This year, #jakartabiennale focuses on the discussion and approach from the artworks that present the basic human impulse and the observation of the complex relations that moves every feeling, sense and insight. Amidst of fanaticism, intolerance, power hunger and the spatial battle recently, these themes have become essential in life and considered as relevant and necessary to be addressed.

Nevertheless, it does not make JIWA : #jakartabiennale 2017 to be distant from the audiences. Ade Darmawan, the Executive Director of Yayasan #jakartabiennale, stated that #jakartabiennale 2017 is a means to enrich and broaden artistic experience and critical ideas for public in approaching various contemporary realities with more sublime and contemplative manners.

Melati sees biennale as a local and international #event that can function as a window, through it, people can see every local issue that are happening in the city where it is held. “localization is an important issue for indonesian artists in the midst of endless questions and observations about the purity of Indonesian arts where actually it needs to be examined in JIWA ; #jakartabiennale 2017”, said Melati. As something that is commonly utilized as an element to build the society, culture and its by-products that can be applied as a standard to comprehend the spirit of an era. “By the standard, we can evaluate the progress and regress of something, either in its the behavior, ideas, or even culture. One of the purpose of JIWA : #jakartabiennale 2017 is to re-examine the standards”, said melati.
