27 June 2019, #london: Today's Contemporary Art Day Sale in #london opened with a 'splash', as Nina Chanel Abney's vibrant and satirically charged canvasParadise Found tripled its pre-sale high estimate, setting a new auction record for the artist at £225,000/$285,548 (lot 101, est. £50,000-70,000).

Achieving strong results for work by some of the biggest names of contemporary art, including Gerhard Richter, Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, Martin Kippenberger, Keith Haring, Robert Indiana, Damien Hirst and Yves Klein, today's auction rounded-off a robust week of Contemporary Art sales at Sotheby's in #london, bringing a combined total of £83,161,300 / $105,602,235 /€93,115,410.

Speaking after last night's evening sale, Alex Branczik, European Head of Contemporary Art at Sotheby's, said: "Tonight was business as usual for Sotheby's with strong results for great art from great collections. We also saw records for Wols, Toyin Ojih Odutola and Pascale Marthine Tayou, and of course, Albert Oehlen who really had his moment this evening. There's undoubtedly a real momentum behind the artist right now."

Contemporary Art Day Auction Total: £14,018,000/ $17,790,244/ €15,674,914

  • Pre-sale estimate: £10.16-14.43 million / $12.35-17.54 million
  • 50% of lots sold above the high estimate
  • Including three works sold to benefit Human Rights Watch

Not only did today's sale see a record for NINA CHANEL ABNEY's fanciful hot-tub scene, South African artist WILLIAM KENTRIDGE also made waves when The Pool soared three times beyond the pre-sale high estimate to achieve £447,000 (lot 225, est. £100-150,000)  - a new auction record for a work on paper by the artist.

Further records included LUKAS DUWENHÖGGER (lot 118, est. £60,000-80,000, sold £162,500), CAROLINE WALKER (lot 199, est. £6,000-8,000, sold £32,500), CARAGH THURING (lot 288, est. £10,000-15,000, sold £30,000).

Further notable results include an undulating sky blue canvas by American artist DONNA HUANCA, who made a stunning auction debut when Pisces (Brows) sold for £32,500, tripling its estimate (lot 108, est. £8,000-12,000).

Contemporary Art Evening Auction Total: £69,143,300/ $87,811,991/ €77,440,496

  • Firmly within the pre-sale estimate: £58-82.8 million/ $73.5-105 million / €64.7-92.4 million
  • 90% sold by lot
  • Over 70% of lots had never been offered at auction before
  • Geographical spread: participating bidders from 34 countries, including Russia, China, Japan and the UAE - almost double the number of countries represented than in March 2019

The evening sale was led by FRANCIS BACON's evocative Self-Portrait, which realised £16,542,650 / $20,969,463 / €18,461,635 (lot 9, est. £15-20 million), or £98,500 per square inch. Hailing from the very height of the artist's career, the work was created in 1975, following the death of the artist's former lover and greatest muse George Dyer. At 14 by 12 inches, it is the only small self-portrait of the artist to be overlaid with fragments of illegible transfer lettering.

Created in tribute to the artist's friend and collaborator Martin Kippenberger, ALBERT OEHLEN's gigantean Selbstportrait mit Leeren Händen (Self-Portrait with Empty Hands), 1998, from the collection of Harald Falckenberg, sold for £5,949,950 / $7,542,157/ €6,640,158 (lot 15, est. £4-6 million), establishing a new record for the artist. Earlier in the sale, 17 pre-registered bidders battled it out for another of the artist's works, signalling a real moment for the artist.

Portraits came out 'ahead' last night, and JENNY SAVILLE's towering Shadow Head sold for £4,184,500 / $5,304,272/ €4, 669,911 (lot 8, est. £3-5 million). Ranking among the top prices for the artist at auction, the sale follows the record-breaking price achieved for Propped in October 2018, which set a new benchmark for a work by a living female artist. Executed over six years, Shadow Head was last shown to the public in 2014 as part of the artist's solo exhibition at Gagosian Gallery in #london.

Further notable results include WOLS' rare Vert Strié Noir Rouge, which was pursued by no fewer than six bidders, among them a Japanese collector who placed the final underbid. After six minutes of heated competition, the painting finally sold to applause for a record-breaking £4,526,200 / $ 5,737,411/ €5,051,249 (lot 23, est. £400,000-600,000) - over seven times the high estimate.

Further auction records were set for TOYIN OJIH ODUTOLA (Lot 7, £471,000/ $597,040 / €525,637 est. £100,000-150,000), and PASCALE MARTHINE TAYOU(lot 36, sold £312,500 / $396,125 / €348,751 est. £250,000-350,000).
