Artist Spotlight: Glenn Brown

I want my work . . . to confuse, to blur what is real and what is memory. Our brains cannot store or recall reality, but must translate and codify it. Like the shadows on the wall of Plato's cave, memories become all that we have.

—Glenn Brown

Gagosian's second season of Artist Spotlight—a series that focuses on an individual artist for one week each month—presents a new painting by Glenn Brown. The featured work will be revealed at gagosian.com on April 30, and will be available for sale for forty-eight hours only.At the heart of Brown's practice is his passion for paint—its abundant associations through history, its opulent textures and meticulous handling.

Appropriating from artists such as Rembrandt, Jean Honoré Fragonard, Salvador Dalí, and Georg Baselitz, as well as science-fiction illustrations and references to popular culture, Brown transforms visual history into something still more extraordinary and strange. Manipulating and mutating both material and medium, he reimagines the palette, scale, and brushwork of his sources, exploring the ways in which images change when they are reproduced.

The result is an illusory, dreamlike realm. The featured work is based on an early sixteenth-century study by Albrecht Dürer—a preparatory drawing for a now-lost altarpiece—and exemplifies a relatively new method of painting for Brown. He begins with a painted sketch, which he gradually builds up with contrasting layers of light and dark. This technique produces a Caravaggesque chiaroscuro, harnessing an imagined light source to create the illusion of depth.

By applying layer upon layer of thin oil paint in a succession of translucent glazes, Brown conjures a glimmering, radiant surface. On April 28, Gagosian Quarterly will publish an exclusive interview between the artist and art historian Jacky Klein, discussing Brown's most recent work and his engagement with the worlds of painting and drawing.Artist Spotlight is a dynamic platform that enables artists to present their work in the digital realm, sharing their stories with a global audience #online.

The series, which launched in April 2020 in response to the pandemic crisis, is now in its second season. It is presented once a month as a regular part of Gagosian's programming. Each installment highlights the work of an individual artist through new editorial features and archival content, and new work is made available with pricing information for forty-eight hours only.
