Pierluigi Fresia - ANTOLOGICA at Fotoforum Innsbruck, Austria

Our view of the world shapes our experiences and also shapes the world around us through our actions and choices. What we believe to be possible defines what we are capable of creating. We should therefore be prepared to believe that the reality we experience is forged solely by our interaction with the surrounding world on the basis of perception or measurement.

The key to reading Fresia's works lies precisely in this moment of interaction between photography, drawing, writing, scratching, feats that cannot be described as separate actions but become a single experience so that we may reflect on the method of observing reality or what we humanly define as such.

Languages overlap, the relationship between image, drawing and or writing is subverted: how do we identify Fresia's artwork? Photography, drawing or writing?
A desire and the willingness to actively engage the spectator, who observes, reads, tries to unsuccessfully find the connection between the image and the other actions, fumbles into his wealth of experiences and knowledge, looking for answers and certainties.

But the artist does not have the truth, he invites us to construct personal, subjective stories: every work is the nurturing of a powerful story, the incipit is given, and the possibilities are infinite. Fresia destabilizes, disorients and forces us to reflect on ourselves through apparent puzzles or rebellions, leaving us in front of this gift with the absolute freedom to create and recreate something that exists only within us.

Francesco Tedeschi - Professor of #contemporaryart History at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, Milan - writes about Fresia:
[...] Fresia's photographic works are, in my opinion, sublime, because they know how to be absolute and at the same time questioning forms. They are not simple images, but forms of thought, fragments of memories that go beyond the visible, becoming metaphors with philosophical implications, also due to the way he conceives and "packages" them, through the added contents like the texts or the signs that complete them. Nevertheless, for years, since he began to work mainly with photography, Fresia has always intended to consider his work as an instrument, as it has been in other cases with his drawing, his painting, his writings or his foot notes. And yet, the image has been and is the companion of his way of operating, as well as of thinking and feeling.

This exhibition ANTOLOGICA, the Italian word for Retrospective, places together some of his most significant and pertinent woks. the majority coming from his his latest projects ENTANGLEMENT and IBIDEM.

Entanglement is a term used in quantum theory to describe how the particles of energy/matter can be correlated and predictably interact with each other, regardless of how distant they are from each other. Many of us have learned that the laws capable of governing the microscopic world are different from those that move the macroscopic one; while physics and quantum mechanics describe the infinitely small, Newtonian physics adheres perfectly to the macroscopic world but, it is the infinitely small that transmits a fascinating image because it is somewhat divergent from the categories of space, time and causality we are used to.
But Fresia makes us question: are we sure that the separation between these two worlds is so clear? Could we, on the other hand, think and believe that the laws of quantum physics and some of its strange phenomena, such as entanglement, can have a validity and manifestation in the physical world as well?

The Ibidem series is only an apparent abandonment to the value of the image as such, because its "layout" makes it part of an invisible path, made up of internal references - the ibidem of the footnotes - in which the whole is ideally fragmented into details, in flowing instants where photography can be a synthesis, but never definitive.

Whatever the effective reason of their creations in their completeness is, Fresia's work is confirmed through these works as an instigation for the observer to actively participate in the disarming complexity of all that is evident.
And as Professor Tedeschi writes Every work, every moment, every hypothesis is part of a path that continues, and continues and continues ...

BIOGRAPHY
Born in Asti in 1962, after his studies he begins his exhibit activity with works often related to conceptual art, first with painting, photography and video, later by often accompanying his work with words and text.
The formally conceptual procedure that can be traced in his latest photographic works has never gone far from those exquisite poetic and existential aspects of his subject matter and the shooting typology. He has often focused on the analysis of the concepts of reality, time, existence and the individual, done through seemingly banal autobiographical or narrative outcrops.
Pierluigi Fresia's works have been shown at various international #contemporaryart fairs: ARCO of Madrid, Artissima in Turin, ARTEFIERA of Bologna, ARTEVERONA, MIA and MIART in Milan, #fotografia EUROPEA (2010 and 2015) in Reggio Emilia, PHOTO BIENNALE Daegu (Korea).
His works have been exhibited in several collective and personal exhibitions in public institutional spaces and in private galleries and belong to various private and public (Foundations and Museums) collections like the MART of Rovereto and the GAM of Turin.
