Maria Stepanova & #sashadugdale with Allan Little
Tuesday 25 May | 7.30pm BST
This coming Tuesday, Moscow-based poet, novelist and journalist #mariastepanova joins fellow poet and translator #sashadugdale to discuss In Memory of Memory, a book which has seen Stepanova's literary stock skyrocket. Beginning with Stepanova sorting through the possessions of her beloved aunt after her death, the book expands seamlessly into a meditation on the nature of memory that sets her in a constellation including W G Sebald, Proust and Susan Sontag. It's a work that is as much about the need to remember as it is about the need to forget. The pair join BBC journalist #allanlittle, while actor Fiona Shaw provides a performed reading from the book during the #event.
Éric Vuillard & #markpolizzotti with Amelia Gentleman
Thursday 27 May | 7.30pm BST
The final #event in our 2021 International Booker Prize Shortlist series arrives next Thursday as we welcome French writer and filmmaker #ericvuillard, winner of the 2017 Prix Goncourt, and translator #markpolizzotti to discuss their latest collaboration, The War of the Poor. This account of the life of a radical preacher in 16th century Germany is much less distant from an 21st century English-speaker's perspective than it may at first sound, as although his life unfolds against the backdrop of the Reformation, the Great Schism, the Peasants' War in Germany and the Peasants' Revolt in England, there are remarkable synergies with the unapologetically populist governments, brutal inequality and rising tide of public protest that are so evident across the world right now. They speak with #ameliagentleman, author of The Windrush Betrayal.
