The Academy of Fine Arts of Carrara confers the title Honorary Academician to Marina Abramović

The great artist and performer Marina Abramović will be proclaimed Academic of Honor this year by the Academy of Fine Arts of Carrara. The director Luciano Massari, together with the entire academic council, wanted to grant the famous performer the high merit that counts among the illustrious predecessors Antonio Canova and John Flaxman and - relaunched in recent years - Maurizio Cattelan together with Massimo Bottura (2018) and Jeff Koons (2019).

The award ceremony for the honorary Academic diploma will take place on 23 June 2021, at 18.00, in mixed mode. While the director Luciano Massari, the president Antonio Passa, the academic council, teachers and students will be present in the Aula Magna of the Academy, Marina Abramović will hold the lectio magistralis from New York live online.

The laudatio is held by Fabio Cavallucci, curator and art critic, former director of various international institutions, who has paid great attention to #performance and the phenomena related to it. The art direction of the event is by the director Carmine Fornari. The artist, after offering the public a lectio magistralis, will be available to answer the students' questions.

Satisfied with the initiative, the director Luciano Massari stresses that "It is the first time in the history of the Academy that this honor has been awarded to a woman. The Academy was founded 250 years ago by Maria Teresa Cybo-Malaspina, and for the work of two other sovereigns, Elisa Bonaparte and Maria Beatrice D'Este, has achieved fame and development, therefore women have been central in our history but there has not yet been an initiative in this sense and this will be the first of a long series".

Marina Abramović was chosen for her high merits in the field of art, as the creator of a research carried out mainly on herself that aims to lead the body and mind to extreme limits, but also a skilled surfer of contemporary languages who expanded the boundaries of the arts, bringing them closer to life.
