Josephine Michau chosen as curator for the Danish Pavilion at the Biennale Architettura 2022 in Venice

The theme will be climate adaptation of coastal landscapes in the future

On behalf of the Ministry of Culture Denmark, a jury comprising representatives from the Danish Arts Foundation Committee for Architecture, the rectors of Denmark's architecture schools, #danisharchitecturecenter and the philanthropic association Realdania selected #josephinemichau as curator of the official Danish exhibition in the Danish Pavilion at the Biennale #architettura 2023 in Venice.

The Danish-French curator and director of Copenhagen Architecture Festival, #josephinemichau was selected from a strong field of three invited candidates, each of whom presented specific ideas and themes for the Danish Pavilion in Venice next year.

At the Biennale #architettura 2023 – the international architecture exhibition in connection with La #biennaledivenezia#josephinemichau will explore and showcase the role of architecture in relation to the global climate and biodiversity agenda. The focus will be on how wetlands, landscapes and nature-oriented #design can contribute to solving the global challenges resulting from rising sea levels.

"The climate and biodiversity crisis is the great common challenge of our time – including for architecture. This crisis demands greater care for our landscapes and a different, more nuanced understanding of the context in which we operate," says #josephinemichau.

Extreme weather conditions and the destructive events they cause are no longer a scenario in the distant future. These extremes have become an everyday global reality that we must adapt to in our landscapes, both natural and human-made. The "how" part of this adaptation is still unclear.

The Ghanaian-Scottish curator for the overall Biennale #architettura 2023, Lesley Lokko, has a vision that the international exhibition should contribute to the creation of new narratives and language for architecture that can uplift the crisis from despair.

Through a spatial installation that makes the coastal landscapes of the future comprehensible for visitors, #josephinemichau wants to bring together scientists, architects and a range of other experts as important voices on climate adaptation of our wetlands and coastal landscapes.

"The Danish exhibition will inspire hope by pointing to solutions and engaging visitors in a way that touches their hearts and minds; where the senses, intellect and community form a symbiotic bond," says #josephinemichau.

Ambitious exhibition idea with artistic format
Under the working title "(Extra)ordinary Landscapes", Michau wants the Danish exhibition to explore, experiment and develop this broad field, with a view to conveying new knowledge and new solutions through exhibition formats that are rich in experiences.

In selecting Michau, the jury statement asserted that she has "formulated an ambitious exhibition idea with international relevance and impact, and which will be executed at a high artistic level. The project is holistically solution-oriented, and the curator consciously examines the importance of thinking positively and across areas of expertise, e.g. by linking research and practice with a focus on smarter solutions."
