Galleria Paola Colombari presents "Design as a Thread" - Tom Vack Photography

Galleria Paola Colombari is inaugurating the exhibition “DESIGN IS A THREAD_TOM VACK PHOTOGRAPHY” on the occasion of the Milan #design Week during the #salonedelmobile2022. A selection of works by the well-known photographer #tomvack and new limited edition Art #design works by #ronaldsasson, #antoniocagianelli, Alê Jordao, #pawelgrunert , #andreadecarvalho, #alessandraroveda and the creative duo #adrianafortunato and #caterinafumagalli, who have turned upcycling into a field of experimentation for textile art with the Noloom Collection signed FIBRA research.

On display are a series of photographic works by #tomvack selected by Ester Pirotta and the new Art #design works selected by Paola Colombari in collaboration for Brazilian #design with Neia Paz.

Tom Vack’s exhibition of fourteen photographs emphasizes the artist’s approach, which travels in parallel in the fields of #design photography and architecture to Fine Art. These different fields are united by a thread, a weave, that binds them, his approach is consistent.

“Before turning my attention to the culture of image I was concentrated and focused on the portrayal of #design. Beginning in the mid-eighties until present I have been involved with some of the iconic designers of our time, such us Philippe Starck, Ron Arad, Ingo Maurer, Marc Newson, Michele De Lucchi and many others. They were often exploring the boundaries of #design and art, appliance and sculpture, in a search for a new expression. One that was shaped by their cultural philosophies and unique personalities. As a messenger of their new #design expression, I too sought out a new and appropriate photographic language that would fit their visions. My approach has always been to accompany the object with a visual context either graphic, scenographic, conceptual, minimal or
theatric. My main medium of expression is light and its revealing qualities but not just as it defines the object but how it shapes our emotions as well. What I call #design Thread is the synthesis of my way of doing expressive research and translating a thought into an image. An approach that travels in parallel both in the field of #design photography and architecture, up to Fine Art. These different areas are united by a thread which binds them and have become part of my personal fabric. All of my photographic projects are centered around seeing and the perceived, since most of what we see is influenced and translated by our hearts and minds. These projects translate and visualize the experience of seeing as a sentient being.” Tom Vack

Brazilian designer #ronaldsasson presents the new sculptural chair ‘Chair Fluid Wood 1’ in laminated plywood (a technique from the 1950s/60s). Guajuvira Laminate Wood is originally from Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, while the base is a honeycomb concrete block. His #design seeks a confluence of the line in an organic or Cartesian way with the infinite possibilities linked to any material, creating luxury with works that have no pretension to exalt the use of materials but relations linked to his country.

Antonio Cagianelli, well-known designer and forerunner of avant-garde New Dada and Pop trends, presents the new ‘Profili’ armchair in patchwork of leather cut-outs assembled and sewn by hand, where he continues the discourse on ‘Capricci’ started in 2021 with the personal exhibition in the suggestive Chiesa della Spina in Pisa. It is an imaginative reworking of stylistic features and iconography from ancient art, particularly Egyptian art, which #antoniocagianelli recomposes in a psychedelic pop key.

The work of Brazilian designer #alejordao is the result of his exploration in the field between art and #design and features the beautiful ‘Bullet’ chair in stainless steel and bulletproof glass, the light sculpture Sneaker Neon - Converse and the D&G sculpture where the artist conceived real urban sculptures that light up and pay homage to haute couture names such as Vivienne Westwood, Coco Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana.

The Polish designer #pawelgrunert re-presents the SIE 73 and SIE 74 stools after the success of the Borbonese showcases in 2021 in stainless steel, 1.5 l PET bottles created with bottles in defense of sustainable #design. For Grunert, #design that cares about the environment does not differ from good #design. This, in turn, is economical and concise in form, and the effect is achieved with the least number of means possible. “Less is more” by Mies van der Rohe.

The Italian art designer and artist #alessandraroveda, fresh from the past success of Home Sweet Home at Spazio Missoni during the Salone del Mobile, this year presents crocheted works of some ancient Sovereigns and Queens including the beautiful sculpture of the Egyptian Queen “Nefertari” wife of Pharaoh Ramses II. The artist covers the crocheted world by freezing affective, vintage objects or creating installations in which she gives knitting the role of absolute protagonist in her surrealist art.

Brazilian artist #andreadecarvalho presents her new work ‘Meteorite Series’ a third-fired ceramic sculpture with a photograph inside. Also on show is the large Tapestry “Nothing is as it seems” a unique work in third-firing ceramic, fabric, mirrored steel, mirror, photographs, crystal. The idea of metamorphosis belongs to the whole activity of the sculptor and photographer who with her tapestries and installations expresses with colour the power of a new surreal language. Also on show are the new sculptures dedicated to Scylla and Charybdis in third-fired ceramic “Untitled 1” and with black earth “Untitled 2”.

The creative duo #adrianafortunato and #caterinafumagalli, who have turned upcycling into a field of experimentation for textile art with the Noloom Collection signed FIBRA research, present a linen and cotton tapestry made by four hands. The materiality of the fibre used to create the work is enhanced through the fusion of different textures and colours, which, as in a large canvas, express the creative and emotional force of the dialogue between the two art designers. Through FIBRA research, the investigation they have been conducting since 2019 into the recovery of textile waste from the Italian industry of excellence.

Also on show will be the “ 6.3 ARMCHAIR “ armchair, a Fiber Art #design project created by 6 hands that unites 3 different cultures and places in the world. It is the result of the fusion of two fascinating projects: the #design of the iconic Orixa armchair, inspired by the imagery of African divinities in Afro-Brazilian culture by the well-known designer #ronaldsasson, and the upcycling of textile art #design by Fibra Research.
