Doris Salcedo: Palimpsest
9 October 2022 to 17 September 2023
From this autumn, the #fondationbeyeler will be showing the large-scale installation Palimpsest by the internationally renowned Colombian artist #dorissalcedo. Salcedo is a maker of sculptures, objects, and lsite-specific interventions that address the endless cycle of violence, public outrage, remembrance, and forgetting. Palimpsest is dedicated to the many refugees and migrants who have died in the past twenty years while trying make the dangerous crossing over the Mediterranean or the Atlantic in search of a better future.
The work takes its title from the Greek word palimpsest, referring to the practice, common in classical and medieval times, of re-using manuscript pages after scraping off the previous writing. The traces of the original text often remained partly visible under the further layers of writing, which facilitated the transmission of ancient texts. Doris Salcedos's Palimpsest is a walk-through installation of sand-colored, porous floor slabs.
