Open call 2023: the winners

Finally, we can announce the winners of the #opencall of the European Photography 2023 edition!

More than 200 artists and curators from all over Europe participated in the #opencall for European Photography for the 2023 edition EUROPE MATTERS – Visioni di un’identità inquieta. This year the festival invites us to reflect on how complex and difficult it is to grasp the nature of Europe as a community, presenting a series of photographic projects that focus mainly on people and identities.

The artistic direction has selected the projects of two artists:

  • Protege Noctem – If Darkness desappeared by Mattia Balsamini (Italy, 1987) documents the alliance that scientists and citizens have formed to mobilize against the disappearance of the night and its creatures. The night sky has become a blurred mosaic and the natural world is also suffering. That is why defending the darkness, averting the apocalypse, represents a revolutionary battle in the ecological in this era.

  • Grande Padre by Camilla de Maffei (Italy, 1981) is a long-term project that, starting from the Albanian case, invites reflection on the global relationship between the individual, society and power. The research process, begun in 2018 and carried out in collaboration with the journalist Christian Elia, proposes an immersion in contemporary Albania. The project aims to explore the implications and consequences of the rise and fall of a regime, highlighting the scars that this transition process has left on society.

The International #opencall of #fotografiaeuropea is realized thanks to the support of Iren, former special sponsor of the festival, who embraces this project and supports the search for new talents and different views on contemporary reality.

You can discover all the exhibitions of this edition of #fotografiaeuropea in Reggio Emilia from 28 April to 11 June 2023, we are waiting for you!
