Sally Gabori

An exceptional evening dedicated to Aboriginal artist Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda #sallygabori to launch her major exhibition, in the presence of her family and specialists of her artworks.

From February 16 to May 14 2023, #triennale Milano and the #fondationcartier pour l’art contemporain presents a major exhibition of Aboriginal artist Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda #sallygabori. To celebrate the opening of this exhibition of discovery, #triennale Milano and the #fondationcartier invite Amanda Gabori Dibirdibi (Sally Gabori’s daughter), Tori Juwarnda Wilson (Sally Gabori’s great-granddaughter), Bruce Johnson McLean (Barbara Jean Humphreys Assistant Director, First Nations and Head Curator, First Nations Art, National Gallery of Australia, #sallygabori specialist and contributor to the exhibition catalogue), and Juliette Lecorne (Curator Fondation Cartier) to pay tribute to the artist.

Considered one of the greatest contemporary Australian artists of the past two decades, #sallygabori began painting in 2005, around the age of eighty, and rapidly achieved national and international renown as an artist. In just a few years of a rare creative intensity, and prior to her death in 2015, she developed a unique, vibrantly colorful body of work with no apparent ties to other aesthetic currents, particularly within contemporary Aboriginal painting.

The conversation between Tori Juwarnda Wilson, Amanda Gabori Dibirdibi and Bruce Johnson McLean will be moderated by Juliette Lecorne, Curator at the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain who has been instrumental in bringing the exhibition to life. They will pay tribute to this exceptional artist, whose work continues to fascinate for its spontaneous, luminous, and profoundly original character, and will talk about the important cultural legacy she has left to her Kaiadilt community.
