Medea, tragic icon of the female condition, is the protagonist of the international con- temporary art exhibition proposed by the Municipal Administration of #siracusa (Italy) and curated by the well-known art critic #demetriopaparoni. Hosted in the historical spaces of the loggia of the Ancient Market of #siracusa, the exhibition will open on May 5, 2023 and will be open to visitors, with free admission, until September 30, 2023. Also in #siracusa, at the Greek Theatre, a week after the opening of the exhibition, Euripid- es’ drama will return to the stage (until July 2) produced by INDA – Istituto Nazionale Dramma Antico – and directed by Federico Tiezzi.

The exhibition includes works by 17 artists created specifically on the theme of #medea, one of the most famous and controversial characters in Greek mythology. The exhi- bition reveals the extent to which the story of the sorceress, infanticide in Euripides’ narration, still affects the imagination of our times. Through the unprecedented gaze of contemporary artists from different geographical areas – from Northern Europe to China, from the Caucasus region to South-East Asia, as well as Italy – the exhibition highlights the inseparable link between #siracusa and ancient theatre. Classical trag- edy is thus revived in #siracusa through contemporary artistic expressions also in the field of visual arts.

Produced by the Municipal Administration of #siracusa and organised by Aditus, #medea will be accompanied by the publication of a catalogue published by Skira, one of the leading art publishers in Europe. In addition to Demetrio Paparoni’s essay, the cata- logue includes texts on #medea written for the occasion by Roberto Alajmo, Tiziano Scarpa, and the artists themselves, who reflect on their respective works. The cata- logue also includes an extensive iconographic repertoire of past works centered on the myth of #medea, with images by Artemisia Gentileschi, Peter Paul Rubens, Charles André van Loo, Eugène Delacroix, Anselm Feuerbach, William Russell Flint, George Romney, Frederick Sandys, Johann Heinrich Füssli, Gustave Moreau, William Turner, Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich, John William Waterhouse, and Paul Cézanne.
