The first Warhol Beuys portraits exhibition since the 1980s.

Andy Warhol
The Joseph Beuys Portraits

‘He himself is a sort of ghost, he has spirituality… Maybe this tabula rasa that Andy Warhol does, this emptiness and cleansing of any traditional signature… is something that creates the possibility of allowing radically different perspectives to enter.’ — Joseph Beuys

‘I like his politics. He should come to the United States and be politically active there. That would be really great. I think an artist should be in the ruling government.I want to support the political efforts of Joseph Beuys because one day he could go onto the street with it. He should become president.’
— Andy Warhol

Revisiting the earliest meetings of Andy Warhol and Joseph Beuys, which took place in 1979, this exhibition brings together a selection of Warhol’s celebrated portraits of Beuys, many of which are shown in the UK for the first time.

This is the first time the works have been presented with a solo focus since they were first exhibited in the 1980s.

The Beuys portraits are held internationally in the collections of major institutions – including the Fondation Beyeler, Riehen; MoMA, New York and Tate, London.
