Must-see: Fortunato Depero

When Giacomo Balla and Fortunato Depero signed the manifesto Ricostruzione futurista dell'universo (Futurist Reconstruction of the Universe) in 1915, the Futurist movement entered a second phase in which the need for total art influenced many aspects of existence: from furniture to fashion, from cinema to theatre, from music to dance, from advertising posters to the design of objects of use.

In fact, Fortunato Depero was not only a talented painter and sculptor, but also a set designer, costume designer, advertising designer and master of the applied arts.

One example is his Balli plastici, one of the first experiments in avantgarde theatre and one of the most ingenious contributions to futurist theatre. The colourful puppets and the ingenious stage design, always in vivid colours, marked an important milestone in the spectacle of our time, and also played a leading role.
His marionettes, automata and puppets became a leitmotif on fabrics, in his paintings, graphics and advertising:

In order to achieve a greater sense of geometric and proportional freedom in costumes, characters and the relationship between stage and figure, it would be necessary to forget even the human element and replace it with the invented automaton, that is, with the new marionette, free in its proportions, of an inventive and imaginative style, capable of offering paradoxical and surprising pleasures of mimicry. (F. Depero)

Unfortunately, after the performances, most of these puppets were used to keep Depero and his wife Rosetta warm during the cold winter of 1918/19, but the drawings of these wooden constructions have survived, and in 1980 Enzo Cogno (set and costume designer at La Fenice) dedicated himself to the philological reconstruction of Depero's plays, including the reconstruction of his puppets, which can be seen at Palazzo Magnani. The exhibition also includes a video with a digital reconstruction of the 1918 performance.
