KATHRYN MACNAUGHTON on view / ANDREW SALGADO opening this October

Kathryn MacNaughton's work is often about tension – between hard and soft, masculine and feminine, playful and dramatic, but also restraint and freedom.

During a residency at PADA Studios in Portugal in the summer of 2019, the artist began to experiment with the formal properties of her paintings; allowing the formal and structural to give way to the gestural and playful; the result of this is that the artist has reached a new height in her art-making. The works are seem simultaneously joyous, free, but confined, breaking and shifting within their allotted space.

MacNaughton deftly interweaves figurative painting with a combination of abstract expressionism, geometric abstraction, and even conventions of the painted still-life into one poetic statement. Here, these forms of figuration and still life have been flattened, like their more
abstract counterparts, to face the frontal plane of the canvas. The works in HEATWAVE, reflect both this sensation of exuberance and light, but also seem to suggest a type of restraint: where colours appear through gradients and bars, and ombré colours seem to burst from the picture
plane. Created during the summer heatwave, the works evoke the brilliant vermilions of a setting sun or rays of light beaming through MacNaughton's studio window.

FORTHCOMING

BEERS London is thrilled to announce the return of Canadian-British artist #andrewsalgado for his fourth solo exhibition at the gallery. Entitled Strange Weather, it is his first full-solo with the gallery since 2016*.

The preview will be held on Saturday, 17 October from 1-5pm. Kindly email info@beerslondon.com to book a timeslot for the opening. Walk-ins welcome, booking encouraged.

Salgado's paintings have evolved greatly since the large-scale, portraits he became known for almost a decade ago; though they have become less autobiographical and increasingly stylized, it can be maintained that ultimately, his paintings are about the human condition in times of conflict. Unfurling over 20 pieces, including both paintings on linen and work on paper, this exuberant series continues Salgado's
exploration into fantastical narratives, mythology-building, and complex storytelling, executed through skillful handling of colour, a knack for powerful (if admittedly 'off-kilter') compositions, a laboured surface texture, and a healthy dose of humour.
