The photographic artist #herlindekoelbl will present her international “Fascination of Science” project for the first time. The opening ceremony will be at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Berlin on Friday October 2, in the presence of the artist and the Managing Board of #siemens AG.

For her latest project, Koelbl took portraits of 60 of the world’s leading Nobel Prize winners and scientists. As part of this process, she asked each of her subjects to note down the essence of their research on their own hand. In very personal inter-views, Koelbl presents the research and life of her subjects, looking for the individu-als behind the discovery and what drives them – irrespective of origin or nationality: “I wanted to find out how they think and with what insights they influence our lives and our future. My aim was to get to know these top scientists better and to com-municate their fascinating insights and life experiences and, yes, to bring #science to life. I traveled halfway around the world for that,” says the artist.

Herlinde Koelbl is among Germany’s most respected photo artists. Her work com-prises long-term photographic projects, documentary films, and video installations. For her most well-known study, “Spuren der Macht” (Traces of Power), she photo-graphed personalities from politics and business between 1991 and 1998, among others German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

By supporting this exhibition project, the #siemens Arts Program has built a bridge between art and #science. The “Fascination of Science” project is an ode not only to #science, but also to the power of art.
“As a physicist, I am fascinated by how #herlindekoelbl makes tangible the interrela-tion between these two disciplines,” explained Roland Busch, Deputy Chief Execu-tive Officer of #siemens AG. “I am convinced that “Fascination of Science” will also motivate many young #people to become passionate about #science and research.”
Stephan Frucht, Director of the #siemens Arts Program, added: “The body of work documents in an impressive way that #science and art are similar in nature and rightly enjoy special protection under the constitution.”

The exhibition will be on display from October 5, 2020 until January 29, 2021 at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Berlin.
A catalog entitled “Faszination Wissenschaft. 60 Begegnungen mit wegweisenden Forschern unserer Zeit” (Fascination of #science. 60 encounters with pioneering re-searchers of our time) has been published by Knesebeck Verlag to coincide with the exhibition.
