London Gallery Weekend returns with new dates for 2022 and a new partnership with Art Fund

Following the success of last year’s inaugural edition, #londongalleryweekend will return in 2022 for a three-day event taking place from 13-15 May 2022.

Bringing together art-lovers, collectors and curators from across the UK, #londongalleryweekend unites the galleries of the capital, which are zoned into three areas of London: central, south and east. Participating galleries in these areas will stage exhibitions by major international artists and emerging talents, alongside an expanded public events programme that includes performances, educational talks and activity packs for families.
The 2022 edition of #londongalleryweekend also sees the launch of a new partnership with Art Fund which will strengthen relationships between London’s galleries and the UK’s regional institutions, through the provision of an annual fund to support travel and accommodation costs for up to 20 regional curators from across the UK to visit #londongalleryweekend. The fund will help to facilitate the visits of representatives from those institutions who would otherwise not be able to finance the journey, and to develop new and existing connections across the broader UK art community.
In addition, Art Fund and #londongalleryweekend will establish a focus group, comprised of figureheads from institutions across the UK, to better understand the collective perspectives and objectives of regional museums and to inform long-term partnerships and patterns of mutual support between the museum and commercial gallery sector. The members of the focus group will change with each future edition of #londongalleryweekend, to allow for continued diversification and the shifting of insights and experience.
"London Gallery Weekend has provided the impetus to refocus on how much potential there is locally, and we are looking forward to a 2022 edition which offers a broader public programme of events and performances across the city, both within the galleries participating and beyond." #jeremyepstein, Founder/Director of London Gallery Weekend
"As we broaden our public programme, it’s important to #londongalleryweekend and its participating galleries to provide a new platform for dialogue, collaboration and reciprocal support between UK's regional museums and London's gallery and artist communities, so we are delighted to be partnering with Art Fund."
Sarah Rustin, Co-Director of London Gallery Weekend
Jenny Waldman, director of Art Fund, said: "Art Fund is looking forward to working with #londongalleryweekend on this new partnership to create stronger connections between museums across the UK, London galleries, and the artists they support.
We are fortunate to have an extraordinary art ecology in the UK. The challenges of the pandemic over the last two years have shown that we can’t take this for granted and must find new ways to strengthen it for the future. One way to do this is by forging new relationships between museums, galleries and artists, and this partnership shall help us all to do this – for the benefit of museum goers and art lovers everywhere."
London Gallery Weekend is also pleased to announce the launch of the second episode in its podcast series hosted by #jandalley, Arts Editor of the Financial Times. The new episode will feature interviews with gallerist #hannahbarry, curator and art historian #aindreaemelife, sculptor Antony Gormley and gallerist David Zwirner, discussing topics ranging from the impact of #londongalleryweekend on London, to how galleries and artists are addressing the issue of climate change, and the future of the gallery model itself. The podcast will be available to download via the London Gallery Weekend website and your preferred podcast app, including Apple and Spotify; produced by Danielle Radojcin at In Talks With.
Last year’s edition of #londongalleryweekend featured 140 participating galleries, from the most renowned international to emerging contemporary art galleries, with over 40,000 visitors to participating galleries over the course of the event, 90 public events and over 20 museum patron group visits.

NOTES TO EDITORS
A grassroots initiative developed to harness the energy of the London gallery scene and to strengthen its accessibility to, and connections with, a wider audience; #londongalleryweekend emerged as an idea over lockdown in London, during which time new connections were forged online between art dealers and gallerists united by common challenges presented by the pandemic. #londongalleryweekend is run by committees combining gallery representatives from east, central and south London, whose combined strengths in programming and events, development, VIP, patron and client relations, communications, operations and finance, benefit the wider network of the gallery landscape. The 2022 edition of #londongalleryweekend has shifted to May due to the Queen's Jubilee, which takes place this year over the first weekend in June.
