2023 is shaping up to be a musical year at the #groningermuseum, with The Rolling Stones – Unzipped, following The Art of Hipgnosis: Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel & 10cc . The Rolling Stones – Unzipped stayed open for just four weeks in 2020 before being shuttered due to the Covid pandemic. Its return to the museum will come as welcome news for those who missed it first time round. The #groningermuseum hosts The Art of Hipgnosis, an exhibition spotlighting iconic album covers designed by London’s Hipgnosis studio, from 19 January.

The Art of Hipgnosis: Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel & 10cc

The Art of Hipgnosis is the first major exhibition devoted to the London design studio Hipgnosis. Since the 1970s, their legendary album covers for some of the world’s biggest rock acts have decorated the walls of millions of teenage bedrooms. But though images like the rainbow prism from Pink Floyd’s LP The Dark Side of the Moon are world-famous, their creators are less well known. Come to the #groningermuseum and discover how Hipgnosis created their iconic designs. The exhibition will be a colourful nostalgia trip, especially for music fans.

Admire Rembrandt van Rijn’s famous painting The Standard Bearer at the #groningermuseum. This is the last chance to see the work before it returns to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

The Rolling Stones – Unzipped
30-6-2023 to January 2024

The Rolling Stones – Unzipped is coming to the #groningermuseum. This international exhibition takes visitors behind the scenes of the iconic rock band’s career. It features original items from the Stones’ private archive, including instruments, stage designs and album covers plus iconic costumes, personal diaries, rare audio fragments and video footage. Tickets go on sale in March 2023.

Joram Krol

Joram Krol is renowned for his penetrating portrait photography. For this exhibition, in partnership with the #groningermuseum, he has photographed a diverse range of Groningers from all walks of life to convey his view of the city.

Gianni Versace Retrospective

This colourful, daring exhibition takes visitors inside the world of Gianni Versace, one of the most influential couturiers in history. See the extravagant garments and revisit the lavish catwalk shows that brought fashion, #pop music and design together in spectacular style. Gianni Versace was murdered 25 years ago, but his revolutionary spirit lives on in the fashion of today.

Bernadet ten Hove

Nymphenburg x #groningermuseum – Porcelain. Art. Design.

Marrying art, design and craft, Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg of Munich has been producing the finest porcelain, pure of form and entirely handmade, since the mid-18th century. Nymphenburg continues to seek out interesting collaborations with today’s artists for the purpose of creating contemporary porcelain. It has partnered with the likes of fashion designer Christian Lacroix, photographer Nick Knight, and the prominent Dutch designers Hella Jongerius and Viktor & Rolf. The #groningermuseum showcases the house’s magnificent creations in dialogue with pieces from the museum’s collection.

Colour!
Until 8-1-2023

How does colour affect us? How do we use it? Colours carry meaning; they evoke emotion and carry symbolic weight. Red stands for desire and passion in Cornelie Tollens’ challenging photo series, but also for an oppressive political regime in the work of the Chinese artist Chi Peng. Colour! brings together a playful selection of highlights from the collection by artists including Inez van Lamsweerde, Jeff Koons, and the De Ploeg painters.

Along with these exhibitions, items from the permanent collection, including work by members of the De Ploeg artists' collective and Dale Chihuly’s Grand Stairwell Installation, are currently on view in the museum.
